Unfinished kitchen cabinets - are they too much extra work?

A highly satisfying and cost-saving way to remodel you kitchen is to do it yourself using unfinished kitchen cabinets.

Big kitchens with lots of cabinets and long bench surfaces may seem too for you to handle. But have a careful look at each component of your current kitchen, and think about the cabinets and benches as single units (which they are).

This will make it easier for you to see the whole job unpacked as a series of relatively simple jobs. And since many of the things you have to do are repetitive, like painting the cabinet doors if you are having painted cabinets, of fitting door hinges or knobs, you will find each unit easier than the previous one to assemble and install. In other words, your kitchen can be looking brand new, with all new cabinets and bench surfaces, without the cost of a builder or professional included!

So I would recommend you consider using unfinished components as you make your kitchen look new again.

Of course, there are many suppliers out there, each offering various degrees of "unfinished".

Some, like the reputable Highlands Designs which markets the excellent real wood products from Jack Campbell's Woodcraft Industries which warehouses in Baltimore, will give you genuinely unfinished. Meaning some of the boards and surfaces will have to be lightly sanded to finish off tiny traces of cutting and saw bench work. Or perhaps there will still be the dust from the sanding on the surfaces, that will need the attention of a damp cloth.

Finishing off this sort of minor touch-up on you kitchen cabinets is both cost-saving and satisfying. After all, we don't often get to work with genuine wood in cabinets nowadays. Most of it is particle board or MDF.

Another good source of unfinished kitchen cabinets would be the well-informed people at US Home Products. Their solid wood and veneer cabinets and doors come unfinished, if you as for it, and while not the cheapest the workmanship and attention to detail is good. Plus there is a small $29 shipping discount on order of more than five cabinets, finished or unfinished.
