Kitchen cabinet organizers - there are two types

Kitchen cabinet organizers are a clever way to get over the biggest problem you will ever have in your cabinets -- unused space.

A good kitchen cabinet, of course, looks very smart when the door is shot. The door knobs gleam. The hinges are either hidden or tastefully recessed. Any accessories harmonize with the paint color or natural wood look. From the outside everything is pleasant and tidy. But open up most cabinets in many kitchens and what do you see? Empty, unused space. And that's why kitchen organizers are so good. The right kind will extend the use you can make of your space by fitting into the door, or replacing the shelves.

There are two basic approaches to designing kitchen organizers: either make the drawers and shelves to fit the contents, or fit baskets and ledges into the inside of the cabinets so it is possible to hang items in otherwise unused spaces.

My wife and I know about each type from personal experience. We recently remodeled our kitchen -- new cabinets, door knobs, accessories and everything -- and in the process removed one type of organizer and replaced it with another.

The organizer we pulled out is called a "lazy Susan". It is a unit of two-tiered round shelving set in a corner cabinet on a vertical pole that ill gently spin with a push. We had our spices and frequently used cooking items in there and it was great. But when we put in the new kitchen we removed it and replaced the organizer with a panty in another part of the kitchen. This pantry has plenty of shelves, of different depth, and is extremely efficient (in that almost all the space is used) and only the bottom shelf is hard to get at.

So the pantry is an organizer with the shelves built in so space is efficiently used. Then we put drawers in place of several of our old shelved cabinets. These draws were deeper than the normal kitchen drawer and strong enough to take the weight of plates. And this is where were store of crockery now. These drawers are pretty well filled, and getting the plates out is simple, easy on the back, and fast.

When you come to choose your kitchen organizers make sure you consider both types.

A good place to start would be The Container Store where you will find chrome stacking shelves for as little as $12 and double chrome corner shelves for $18 (although at the time I wrote this they were on sale for $13.50). Bargains!
