How to install kitchen cabinets fast and easy

There are two ways to learn how to install kitchen cabinets.

First you can go to the supplier's web site and order the doors, cabinets, hinges and knobs etc that you will need. (And paint, if you are going to have your kitchen painted.) Unpack them when they arrive in their flat packs, and work your way through the detailed instructions that should be with your cabinets. But this is the hard way. It assumes you know how to remove the old kitchen and that you have the tools you'll need to put in a new bench and make the replacement cabinets level and square. For many of us (myself definitely included) this is a big ask. This assumes more than I would be confident with. Well, the good news is, that you can install them a lot easier than that.

The second suggestion is to hire a builder and work with him. He will guide you as the old cabinets and bench are removed, the plumbing unhooked and the surfaces prepared for your new kitchen. And when it comes to assembling the cabinets and putting them in place, he will be on hand to deal with any of those little technical issues that are bound to arise. When you see how he solves the problems you will grow in your confidence to be able to do it yourself next time.

Either way, there are several time- and effort-saving tips you need to know as you begin.

Here's one. Start with the highest cabinets. This way you won't have to find ways to work around the lower cabinets. Believe me, this simple suggestion has saved a lot of people a lot of time and stress in their kitchen!

Plan to have your old kitchen stripped out and clear of the cabinets you are replacing a day before you bring in the new fittings. This will make the assembly and installation easier, but will also give you some time to paint the walls and do any work on the flooring that will be necessary. Your new cabinets may not be the same sizes as the old, so you will need to paint any exposed surfaces, and the easiest time will be when the kitchen is completely empty.
