DIY kitchen cabinet install

The good news is that you don't need to go to all the expense of hiring a professional to install your kitchen cabinet. You can do it yourself.

Having said that, you will need the right tools and must have had some experience in using them. Let's face it, a major kitchen feature like cabinet doors, or the paint job on the brand new cabinet, is not the place to be learning. Any mistake will show up and every visitor will see your amateur workmanship. But still, a DIY kitchen cabinet install is something any competent layman can do. You just have to be able to make the kitchen counter tops level, the stainless steel sinks need to drain correctly, and, if you are thinking of using your kitchen island ideas, they have to be secure and level.

The most important thing is the start. And specifically, the wall you begin on the first cabinets you install. Get them sitting right, and the other doors rest of the cabinets will all fit together with very easily. And look good.

So put some time into these first cabinets. We're not talking here about kitchen cabinet accessories, like knobs and hinges. They will fit in nicely later. Rather, at the start you've got to get the front to back and side to side levels true. So carefully and quietly go about getting that first wall and cabinet married together exactly level and plumb.

We did our kitchen last year and had to pull out all the old cabinets. As we did we discovered the walls were warped and the floors uneven. Fortunately our cabinets came with adjustable legs. That took care of the levels. But if a visitor will look carefully along the wall they may notice the slight buckle that we just could not get rid of.

It was quicker to do the kitchen than I had expected. We ordered the cabinets so they would arrive ready to assemble in flat packs. Sunco cabinets are like this. They're made from real wood -- that's the doors and everything -- and retailed form US Building Products. You can order them ready to put together, which is not difficult, or assembled already. Obviously, it is easier to get them shipped to your home is you are prepared to do the assembly yourself. All the knobs and hinges and trims are with them, so putting them together is actually not difficult.

And after all the work -- you have a brand new kitchen!
